BULLETIN: 17th November 2013

George Ferguson: Defend Bristol or Resign!

Bristol Mayor George Ferguson is due to announce this week a further reduction in what’s left of Bristol City Council’s budget of 25% or £90 million per year! This will result in 800 full-time equivalent job losses which Unison estimates will affect 1,000 workers including part-timers. These cuts will devastate local services, which are already stretched. Many non-statutory services that we currently rely on will simply disappear.

Ferguson & his cuts cabinet cannot be allowed to get away with this! Cabinet members must resign in protest, councillors must stand up for their voters and vote this budget down and Ferguson must stand up for Bristol against the ConDems like he promised to do during the election!

The council are trying to rush this through so we have to move quickly. On Monday night (18th November), Ferguson will announce the cuts at an event at Wills Memorial Building. BADACA along with other campaigners will be demonstrating outside from 5.30pm. Details here:

Then on Wednesday (November 20th) we are holding a joint planning meeting for the campaign against the mayor’s cuts with Bristol People’s Assembly Against Austerity and Unite the Resistance. Steve Mills, Branch Secretary of Bristol City Unison* is speaking to outline what the effects of the cuts will be on workers and service users. This will be an important meeting where we will hopefully be able to agree a joint petition & statement and plan a programme of action to build the campaign against these savage cuts. Meet 7pm, Hamilton House. Meeting details here:

Then over the next month, there are various budget consultation and other council meetings where Ferguson will attempt to justify his disastrous policies. Most of these meetings are open to the public but places have to be booked online in advance. For details of the meetings and how to book click here:
